We’re continuing our series for Mac users who are new to the world of Windows, whatever the reason you’ve decided to branch out. This time, let's talk about a scenario every computer user faces: a frozen application. On your Mac, you’d hit Command+Option+Escape to force quit. On Windows, your new best friend for this job is the Task Manager.
Think of the Task Manager as Mac's Activity Monitor and Force Quit window rolled into one powerful utility. It’s the command center for everything running on your PC, and knowing how to use it—even in a small way—can help you save a lot of time and frustration.
When a program freezes up, you have options beyond simply waiting and hoping it starts working again. The Task Manager is what gives you these options. Fortunately, it is relatively easy to get to: press Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
Alternatively, you can right-click the Taskbar (which we covered a few months ago) at the bottom of your screen and select "Task Manager."
Once the window opens, you’ll have a few tabs to review. In the Processes tab, you'll see a list of all running applications. The one that's frozen will likely have the status "Not responding."
To force the task to end, click to highlight the misbehaving program, then click the End task button in the bottom-right corner. The unresponsive application will immediately close.
Of course, the Task Manager is capable of more than just terminating a stuttering application. It also serves as a fantastic diagnostic tool.
The Performance tab provides a real-time view of how your computer's resources (CPU, Memory, Disk) are being utilized. It's perfect for figuring out what's slowing you down.
The Startup tab allows you to view—and disable—programs that launch automatically when you turn on your PC, which can significantly improve your boot speed. That said, don’t just start clicking and canceling processes without IT's help. You could potentially cause harm to something important without intending to.
Additionally, ensure that you keep your IT resources informed. While the Task Manager is great for first aid, you shouldn't have to rely on it constantly. If you’re continually dealing with frozen apps or a sluggish system, it could be a sign of a deeper issue that a simple "end task" won't solve.
